The Granddaddy Just Got Better: Pine Lakes Adds New Tees for Every Skill Level

Pine Lakes Country Club, Myrtle Beach’s first golf course, has added two new sets of tees as “The Granddaddy” looks toward the celebration of the club’s centennial anniversary in 2027.

The new tees add only modest length to the historic layout, but they dramatically improve one of Pine Lakes’ biggest challenges: helping golfers find a tee box that matches their game. As you begin planning your next Myrtle Beach golf trip, here is what the new tees will mean for your next trip.

Why did Pine Lakes install new tees?
Previously, Pine Lakes had four sets of tees, running from 4,718 to 6,675 yards, and while those yardages don’t immediately scream, “long layout,” the course had a lot of length for a par 70. For mid to high handicappers, there was a 500+ yard gap between the No. 2 and 3 tees (5,756 vs. 6,305 yards). Many players naturally gravitated toward the longer tees, not taking into account Pine Lakes has only two par 5s, making the course play longer than the scorecard suggested. The new tees will smooth out those yardage gaps without softening the layout.

If I’m a low handicapper, what do the new tees mean to me?
Truthfully, the better you are, the less the impact of the new tee boxes. The tips at Pine Lakes are only 100 yards longer with much of that length coming on the par 4 seventh hole, which now plays 60 yards longer, pushing it to 440 yards.

What do the new tees mean if you are a mid-handicapper?
Here is where you will begin to see the impact of the tee work. Previously, most golfers played from the 6,305-yard No. 3 tees, which were too long for many people who teed it up. With the new configuration, the new No. 4 tees play 6,068 yards, which is the equivalent of 6,200-6,300 yards on a par 72. They are an outstanding addition, shortening the length of some of the course’s most daunting holes, including No. 3 and No. 8. If you are worried about the course being “easier,” banish the thought. Pine Lakes still offers plenty of challenge.

Who are the biggest winners?
While mid-handicappers will undoubtedly benefit, Pine Lakes Country Club members, senior golfers and women are the biggest winners of the project. The Granddaddy now has three sets of tees between 4,025 and 5,542 yards, providing more options for players who previously struggled with the course’s length.

When were the new tees unveiled?
The new tees were installed over the winter and spring of 2026, and it’s a credit to the Pine Lakes agronomy team that the project didn’t disturb play. The new tees opened in late May, the scorecards have been printed, and the USGA’s GHIN app already reflects the change.

Golfers didn’t need another reason to play the Granddaddy, but the venerable layout’s appeal is now greater than ever.
