The Avocet Course at Wild Wing Reopens with Revitalized Greens Ahead of Fall Golf Season

A week after the July 22 reopening of the Avocet Course, which closed for an unscheduled greens renovation project, a relaxed smile creased the face of Wild Wing general manager Mark Andrews.

“I can wholeheartedly say the golf course will be good, and it’s only going to get better,” he said when asked what players taking a Myrtle Beach golf trip can expect to find at Avocet. “That makes my job a lot easier.”

Following an unusually harsh winter, including a rare January snowstorm, the Larry Nelson-Jeff Brauer design battled winter kill on its greens, a problem that didn’t fully reveal itself until Myrtle Beach’s balmy weather brought an end to the overseed’s life cycle in late May.

With every green showing signs of stress, Avocet closed on June 15 and sprigged the affected areas with MiniVerde, and the effort delivered the desired result.

“Right now, I would say they are between 90 and 95 percent back,” Andrews said in late July.

The meat of the greens are already in good condition and as the collars continue filling in over the first 7-10 days of August, Avocet should be hitting its stride in time for the area’s peak fall season.

“By the time package season arrives in September, you will never even know what happened,” Andrews said.

An unintended benefit of the closure was the reprieve the rest of the course got during the closure. Due to the lack of play, the fairways and rough are pristine and the bridges have all been replaced.

Avocet has long been touted for its creative design, highlighted by the drivable par-4 14th hole and the double green holes six and 17 share.

“Yes, big time,” Andrew said when asked if was excited for the fall. “This is a golf course that’s always been known for its conditions, and when something like this happens, it’s tough. We have a high standard around here. (The recovery) is encouraging because when people come down to play on their golf trips, they’ll get the condition that they expect from Wild Wing for sure.”
